Miniature Lamps

The term "miniature lamp" is relatively recent. Originally, manufacturers of these little lamps called them "Night Lamps." Similar in function to today's nightlight, this low-level light source was intended for a bedroom, hallway, or bathroom. Early miniature lamps contained just enough fuel to burn through the night.

What size lamp constitutes being called a miniature? Some collectors use burner size; others prefer a total height not greater than ten inches. One definition that is popular with many collectors is "any lamp not intended to produce enough light for reading."

Stuart's Musings

Salts

Before the dawn of refineries, which rendered salt crystals small enough to pass through a pinhole, salt was served in small, open dishes. Hence the term "open salts." These small dishes were also known as salt cellars and salt dips. The dish was typically accompanied by a very small spoon.

Salts can be found in a variety of mediums, with the most popular being glass—in myriad varieties and colors—as well as porcelain, pewter, and silver.

Although relatively obsolete today, open salts are favorites among collectors to the extent there are several regional open salt collectors clubs and societies. The list includes: the Midwest Open Salt Society, the New England Society of Open Salt Collectors, the Open Salt Collectors of the Atlantic Region, the Open Salt Society Of The West of Northern California, and the Open Salt Society Of The West of Southern California.
