Antiques and Vintage Collectibles Spotlight
Pewter
Pewter is a soft metal alloy containing at least 51% tin and lead plus varying amounts of copper, zinc, or antimony. Modern pewter contains approximately 92% tin with small amounts of antimony, copper, or bismuth for additional strength.
Whereas, Roman pewterware dates back to the 14th century, the earliest known pewter can be traced back 2,000 years to China. The history of pewter in America begins with the colonial period. At least five pewterers were active in the Massachusetts Bay Colony by 1640. These craftsmen had trained in England under the stringent rules of The Worshipful Company of Pewterers, a powerful guild that strictly regulated all aspects of the manufacture of English pewter.
Historically, pewter has been used to create plates, chargers, spoons, cups, sugar bowls, tankards, porringers, teapots, candlesticks, and small decorative objects. Today, pewter is a choice metal of modern sculptors and jewelers.

Stuart's Musings
The Shakers
The Shakers religious beliefs, combined with their dedication to hard work and perfection, resulted in a variety of architecture, furniture, and artifacts. Shakers designed their furniture with care, believing that "making something well was in itself, an act of prayer." Their items were created with only their intended use in mind. They focused on form and function; no elaborate details or extra decorations.
Shaker craftsmen primarily used pine or other inexpensive woods, hence their furniture was light in color and weight. The ladder-back chair was a popular piece of furniture.
Shakers introduced many inventions, such as the screw propeller, Babbitt metal, the rotary harrow, the circular saw, the clothespin, the flat broom, and the wheel-driven washing machine.

"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!
- Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
- Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
- Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
- Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
- Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
- Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
- The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
- The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
