Mount Washington Glass
In 1870, William L. Libbey moved the Mount Washington Glass Works from South Boston to New Bedford. He brought in Frederick S. Shirley to manage its glass products and under Shirley's tutelage, the company produced exquisite Victorian era American art glass.
Not only was Mt. Washington Glass Company inventive in the colors of the glass it produced, it excelled in decoration. Albert Steffin's elegant and unique decorations for Mt. Washington were considered the finest in the country. It is no wonder that Mount Washington glass is highly prized by today's collectors.
The Mt. Washington glass line includes:
Rose Amber (Amberina). This was a heat sensitive amber glass that was reheated to create a red hue on the portion that was reheated.
Burmese. Mt. Washington was the only U.S. glass company to manufacture Burmese glass, a translucent glass that is shaded from a bright yellow at the base to a coral or salmon pink at the top. Two types of Burmese glass were produced; the original shiny finish or a soft matte finish achieved by washing the glass in acid. Burmese glass was blown, blown molded, and press molded.
Peachblow. Shirley created Peachblow glass by substituting a small amount of cobalt or copper oxide in place of the uranium oxide used in the production of Burmese, turning it from peach to ivory. Peachblow never achieved the popularity or success of Burmese and was only produced from 1886 until 1888. Mt. Washington Peachblow is a rare find.
Crown Milano. Steffin and Shirley held a joint patent for decorating opal lamp shades and bases which became known as Mt. Washington Crown Milano. Crown Milano was usually made of opal glass that was free blown of pattern molded glass, tinted a delicate color, and decorated with enameling and gilt. Most of the glass was given an acid or matte finish. Its decorations were many and varied, and occasionally a color other than opal was used, such as Burmese or a soft pale yellow to green opaque glass.
Royal Flemish. Produced during the late 1880s, Royal Flemish glass is the most exotic glass produced by Mt. Washington. A clear, transparent crystal with a stained glass effect, its surface was divided with raised gold lines and sections filled with transparent colors and decorated in gold enamel. There are rare examples of this glass in blue, green, pink, and yellow. Royal Flemish is very scarce, thus highly collectible.

Fun Facts
- Mount Washington was awarded a certificate of merit for its exhibit at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.
- A patent for heat-sensitive shaded glass called Amberina was issued in 1886 to Frederick Shirley. However, this glass was identical to glass patented by Joseph Lock of the New England Glass Company in1883. The New England Glass Co. filed suit to stop Mt. Washington's production of the glass. The suit was settled when Mt. Washington changed the name of its glass to Rose Amber.

Stuart's Musings
Benefits of consignment
Perhaps the saddest sales stories we hear are from people who simply didn't know any better. They owned heirloom jewelry, an antique lamp, glassware, or china that once belonged to a great-grandparent, aunt or uncle, and decided to sell it. And the story unfolds...
Take Sally, for example. She headed to her local antique dealer and asked, "How much will you give me for this?"
Now, this dealer isn't a bad person or a crook. The dealer is simply a businessperson trying to make the most profitable deal, and so offered Sally $25.00 for her Great-Aunt Martha's grade-school inkwell.
"Twenty-five bucks?" said Sally. "That's all?" And the dealer nodded, adding, "I'll give you cash right now."
So Sally thought, 'What the heck. I'll never use this inkwell and I can use the cash to fill up my car." And the deal was done.
On the way home Sally stopped at the gas station on Route 20 in Sturbridge, bought $25.00 worth of gas (not quite a full tank) and spied Showcase Antique Center just ahead. 'What the heck. I'll pop in and see what they've got.'
While Sally was browsing the store she noticed a case with several inkwells on display. Her heart sank as she read the price tags-- $250...$495...$335.... "Oh, Lord! What did I do?" She walked up to me. "I'm curious," Sally said. "I was just down the street and sold them a blue glass inkwell that looked like a teakettle for $25.00. Did I get ripped off?"
Now, just last week we sold a cobalt blue glass teakettle inkwell for $500.00. I felt badly for the lady. If only she had consigned her inkwell with us...
When you consign with Showcase Antique Center, we will appraise your item and get you the highest value possible. Even with our commission deducted, Sally could have received ten times the amount of money for her inkwell.
So next time you have antique or collectible items to sell, consider consigning your valuables with Showcase Antique Center.

Need to sell more than what's in your attic?
Need to sell your whole house?
Then it's time to call Stuart!
|
Stuart Brody, president of Showcase Antique Center, Inc., has added real estate auctioneer to his extensive and impressive list of credentials.
"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!
- Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
- Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
- Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
- Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
- Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
- Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
- The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
- The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
