Antiques and Vintage Collectibles Spotlight
Doorstops
Although figural cast-iron doorstops date back to the 1880s, they enjoyed their heyday in America during the first half of the twentieth century.
A well-cast iron doorstop is smooth in texture. Small chipping of paint is acceptable, however, an antique item will lose value if it is repainted. Popular motifs included animals, flower baskets, ships, cottages, and houses.
Manufacturers of cast iron doorstops include the Albany Foundry, Bradley and Hubbard, and the Hubley Manufacturing Co. Hubley doorstops are valued for their colorful, and often whimsical painted surfaces. To verify if your doorstop is a Hubley, turn it over and look for a three-digit number incised into the metal. A Hubley with original paint and in good condition has a higher value.

Stuart's Musings
Watercolors
Watercolor, (aquarelle in French), is generally used to describe painting with water-soluble pigments on paper. The pigment is applied in a series of transparent washes which allows light to be reflected from the paper through the layers of color. The washes are layered to increase density and transform the colors already laid down. This technique is what gives watercolor its unique glow.
Although this classic painting technique was perfected in England during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, primitive man used pigments mixed with water to create cave paintings. Ancient Egyptians used water-based paints to decorate the walls of temples and tombs and created some of the first works on papyrus.

"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!
- Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
- Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
- Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
- Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
- Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
- Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
- The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
- The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
