Jenny Lind – The World’s Sweetest Singer
|
Jenny Lind, the Swedish nightingale, was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1820. In September 1850, P. T. Barnum brought Jenny to America, embarking on a nationwide tour that would bring him a vast fortune and create a new cultural phenomenon: the celebrity.
Barnum’s unprecedented media campaign created such great public anticipation that 40,000 people lined up to greet the arrival of her ship in New York harbor. From her opening concert in New York to subsequent performances in cities and towns across the country, Barnum fueled public fascination with Lind by orchestrating events and negotiating Lind-endorsed products and Lind memorabilia. Lind's name was eventually tied to every kind of commodity–from songs to clothing to furniture–and a collector’s favorite: the Jenny Lind bell.
Designed for middle-class households, these consumer products heralded the singer's modesty, benevolence and selflessness. The display of Lind objects in the home communicated the owners' desire to emulate Lind's character.
One scholar contends that because of Barnum’s promotion, Lind became "the standard for measuring not just sopranos, or even women artists, but women" throughout the 1850s.
Fun Facts
- It’s been said that Jenny Lind, at the tender age of three, could repeat a song that she had heard but once.
- The Jenny Lind Chapel in Andover, Illinois, was built in 1850 and endowed by Jenny Lind.

Stuart's Musings
| Figural cast iron doorstops date back to the 1880s, yet they enjoyed their
heyday in America from1910 to 1940. Popular motifs include animals, flower
baskets, ships, cottages and houses providing a touch of whimsy.
The casting process. Metalworkers would carve out a form of wood, or hammer the
doorstop design out in metal. The form was then pressed into finely compacted
sand making an impression. Cast iron, heated to 3,000 degrees, was poured into
the sand mold. When cooled, the form would pop out. Rough edges were filed off,
a ground coat of paint added and then painted according to the desired motif. A
well-cast iron doorstop will be smooth in texture. Small chipping of paint is
acceptable, but there should be no repainting of an antique item.
Manufacturers of cast iron doorstops include the Albany Foundry, Bradley and
Hubbard and the Hubley Manufacturing Co. Hubley was a Lancaster, Pennsylvania,
toy manufacturer that also made doorstops, which are valued for their colorful
painted surfaces. To check if your doorstop is a Hubley turn it over and look
for a three-digit number incised into the metal. A Hubley with original paint
and in good condition has a higher value

| Filmmaker and Boston-area comic Gary Roma began collecting doorstops as a teenager. His 300-plus collection led him to realize the dramatic possibilities of those “oft-kicked, under-appreciated objects.” Roma researched and produced, Off the Ground and Off the Wall: A Doorstop Documentary. The Los Angeles Times called it an "admirably obsessive look at the uses and abuses of doorstops."
The documentary screened at more than a dozen festivals across the country, including the American Film Institute National Video Festival in Hollywood and the New England Film and Video Festival. It won three awards, including Best Documentary, at the IAC International Film and Video Competition in Staffordshire, England.
