Tobacco

Ah, tobacco.... Nary a product has been so enjoyed and so despised. So, health concerns aside, let's look at the history of tobacco through the eyes of a collector. The variety of cigar and cigarette-related antique items offers collectors a view into the ingenuity of our ancestors. From biting off a cigar butt with one's teeth, to the vest pocket cigar cutters of the mid-1800s to rotating blade cutters of the early twentieth century; from sterling silver cigarette cases and holders to humidors and classic cardboard cigar boxes; from match safes to advertising lighters, man's penchant for the smoking process has led to many an invention.

Stuart's Musings

Profile on Cameos

Cameos possess a unique elegance. Whether a classic profile or scenic representation, the artistry of cameo carvings has enchanted people since ancient Greek and Roman times. Fine cameos are created from hard stone such as chalcedony, sardonyx, carnelian, jasper, and colored agates. Conch shell, coral, abalone, and lava are mediums also used.

A cameo is usually made of two types of precious or semi-precious stones. One material is carved into a figure, the most common being a profile portrait of a person's head. The artful carving is then set upon the other type of stone, providing a background that offsets the portrait.

Cameos were worn primarily by royalty and members of the high clergy during the Renaissance. This style of jewelry was extremely popular during the reign of Queen Victoria. Her penchant for wearing cameos inspired Italian artists to create carvings in her likeness. Cameos carved from the lava of Mt. Vesuvius were distinctly Italian in origin.

Most cameos found in antique shops today are from the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, and are often carved in conch shell. Hard stone and lava cameos in pristine condition are highly valued by collectors.

Stuart Brody, president of Showcase Antique Center, Inc., has added real estate agent and auctioneer to his extensive and impressive list of credentials.
"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!

  • Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
  • Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
  • Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
  • Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
  • Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
  • Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
  • The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
  • The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
