Bookends

Bookends were created out of necessity • to keep stacks of books from piling down atop one's head. Yet, like most utilitarian inventions, artistry and aesthetics took hold and bookends evolved into practical works of art.

From whimsical designs to thematic collectibles featuring dogs or nautical items, bookends offer as much insight into a book collector's interests as do the books themselves.

Stuart's Musings

Majolica

Majolica wares were introduced to the public during London's Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851. However, this unique pottery made its first European appearance during the 13th century, when the tin-glazed Hispano-Moresque pottery originating from the port of Majorca • hence, it's name, Majolica • arrived in Pisa, Italy.

Renaissance Italian potters from the small town of Deruta made use of the special clay from the Umbrian hills, establishing it as the center for maiolic. Their experimentations with applied tin glazes to the soft earthenware created unique and colorful designs onto shapes such as platters and pitchers.

During the 17th century, maiolica was further development in England. Notable European manufacturers of majolica wares include Herbert Minton, Josiah Wedgwood, Joseph Holdcroft, and George Jones. Two of the most recognized American names are Griffin, Smith and Hill (Etruscan) and Chesapeake Pottery.

Stuart conducts negotiated sales and short sales for both residential and commercial properties in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!

  • Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
  • Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
  • Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
  • Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
  • Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
  • Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
  • The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
  • The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.

Properties For Sale!

Shrewsbury, MA

Own a terrific example of pre-Revolutionary architecture! The historic Daniel Garfield House, circa 1736, built by the great-great uncle of President James Garfield. Located at 398 Walnut Street, a quintessential New England road, with its century old trees and stone walls, many built by the area's original farmers. Previous owners have maintained the integrity of the original post and beam structure throughout renovations and additions, including the complete insulation of the home.
The home has great details: original wooden pegs holding half timber attic roof rafters to the five sided ridge pole, a massive foundation for the four central fireplaces, wide plank floors, hand-hewn ceiling/floor joists, four panel doors with wrought iron thumb latches, original hearths, paneling, trim, and even "Katie bars" on front and rear doors. The eight foot first floor ceilings are evidence of the Garfield wealth.
Replaced furnace and hot water heater; 40-year roof; electrical re-wiring where needed; stainless steel kitchen appliances; new kitchen pantries. Renovated upstairs bath. New plaster in most of the original house, and 1700s wall painting reproduction in three rooms. Windows have been renovated or replaced.
Four major additions have occurred in the past half century. Two created the 29'X17' kitchen, a fourth bedroom, a new 17'X17' master bedroom with its large windows, cathedral ceiling, and 13' of closets hidden behind a paneled wall. Another addition added the 20'X13' three season sunroom with cathedral ceiling and herringbone brick floor.
Finally, an addition created some of the home's most intriguing features - the car drive-through to the rear facing two-car garage. Above the garage and drive-through is the incredible 26'X25' great room with its massive fireplace and gunstock mantle, 26'X10' deck, and 17'X12' mixed-use room. A 30'X28', 1.5 story, multi-purpose outbuilding with a double wide garage door and 220V electricity, deal for home office or business, additional storage, workshop, or barn. Perennial gardens, fruit trees, and large front and rear lawns provide great privacy and enjoyment. List price: $549,000
