A Penny Saved
|
Barnum's unprecedented media campaign Penny banks are treasured toys to some and fascinating mechanical devices to others. These unique items enjoy quite a history.
There are still banks, essentially without moving parts, in which you simply insert money without the assistance of a mechanical device. Mechanical banks, those that flip coins into a receptor, may use a spring-driven device to shoot the coin from one part of the bank to the slot. Other mechanical banks are weight driven with intricate mechanics that make them move and create a little fun along the way. A familiar example is the clown that sticks out his tongue to receive the coin, then retracts it thereby allowing the coin to fall into the bank.
Banks were made of cast iron, tin, pottery, wood, pot metal, and glass and depicted many aspects of American lifefrom folk art to political campaigns, corporate branding to World's Fairs.
The principal foundries were J.E. Stevens, Cromwell, Conn.; Hubley Mfg. Co., Lancaster, Pa.; Reading Foundry Co., Reading, Pa.; Enterprise Mfg. Co.,Phila., Pa.; The Shepherd Co., Buffalo, N.Y.; Kenton Hardware Co., Kenton, Ohio; Grey Iron Casting Co., Columbia, Pa.

Vending machines are an ancient invention, dating back to 200 B.C. when holy water was dispensed from coin-operated vases! |
Stuart's Musings
|
Women of the Victorian era had an array of clothing accessories no longer used by today¹s woman, such as the posy holders. One clothing accessory that is a favorite among collectors is the skirt lifter. These enchanting items were used to raise the hem of a lady's skirt by gripping it between the two discs. A cord ran through the loop on the top of the head of the lifter and was threaded through the belt. A pull of the cord allowed the skirt to raise when stepping out from a carriage, walking on lawns or pathways, or going up or down stairs.
The top of the skirt lifter, often made of polished brass, featured a raised decoration or pressed image.
