Stuart's Musings

Pewter

While some may regard pewter as the "poor man's sterling silver," those who understand its history have a full appreciation for this unique metal alloy. Pewter is a tin alloy, which means any mix of metals containing at least 51% tin. Early pewter wares also contained a sizeable quantity of lead. (Today's fine pewter is lead free.)

While it is thought that the Chinese produced pewter as far back as 2,000 years ago, many historians trace it to the Romans. The Romans used pewter for seals of office and other small wares. The Roman occupation of Britain, and the securing of English tin, copper and lead mines of Cornwall, may explain why Roman pewter has been disinterred at various sites in Great Britain. Through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, tin, lead and copper continued to be England's major export.

The history of pewter in America can be traced back to colonial times. The metal made its first appearance in Jamestown, Virginia in 1610, and in the New England area in the 1630s. At least five pewterers, trained in England under the strict auspices of The Worshipful Company of Pewterers, were active in the Massachusetts Bay Colony by 1640.

Many pewterers stamped their work with a mark called a touchmark, or a touch. While English touch designs, such as the rampant lion, were popular before the Revolutionary War, afterwards the American eagle, the symbol of freedom, was often substituted.

Stuart Brody, president of Showcase Antique Center, Inc., has added real estate agent and auctioneer to his extensive and impressive list of credentials.
"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!

  • Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
  • Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
  • Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
  • Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
  • Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
  • Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
  • The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
  • The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
