Carnival Glass
|
Carnival Glass was another big seller during the May Brimfield Antique Show. Manufactured between 1905 and 1930, Carnival Glass' unique appearance is created by glass that is pressed and iridized--a process in which hot pressed glass is exposed to sprays, fumes and vapors from heated metallic oxides. The signature iridescent shine reflects a rainbow of colors, or an opalescence, similar to the colors in a floating soap bubble.
In1908, the Fenton Art Glass Company, of Williamstown, West Virginia was the first company to produce en masse iridized glass, then called Iridill and Rubi-glass. In the same year, the Northwood Glass Company produced a similar line of iridized glass called Golden Iris.
This colorful glass went by many names over a period of years. It wasn't until the 1950s that glass collectors began calling it Carnival Glass, possibly due to the glass having been given away at carnivals.
One notable design from the Northwood Glass Company was the Grape and Cable. First produced in 1910, the pattern was continued for several years and offered in a range of colors and a wide variety of items.
Fenton Art Glass also produced a design showing grapes and cables. However, the Northwood trademark of a circle surrounding a capital N distinguishes Northwood patterns.
Carnival Glass was not produced in the United States between 1931 and the 1950s. During those years, however, the glass was produced in Europe, Australia, and Argentina.
Fun Facts
The word 'Iris' is from the Greek word for rainbow.

Stuart's Musings
What it Means to be Dresden
During the 19th century, Dresden, Germany was known for its many porcelain factories. A characteristic ornamentation of Dresden porcelain is in the Rococo style and includes lavish florals and foliates, shells, cherubs, and figurals as ornamentation.
Yet, Dresden has become a general term used to describe any ornately decorated porcelain wares produced in Germany.
Add to this, the use of the term Dresden Style. These are porcelain wares that are produced and decorated in the style of the German factories and studios. Many Dresden-style porcelain wares were copied and produced in France and England.
