Stuart's Musings

A Dip Into Inkwell History

From the Middle Ages until the introduction of the ballpoint pen in the 1930s, scribes dipped pens in inkwells fashioned in myriad styles, shapes and materials. Early inkpots or inkhorns were made of horn and leather. Our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence using a sterling silver inkstand, and European royalty dipped their quills into silver and gold inkwells.

To differentiate, inkwells are receptacles which hold ink for dipping a pen or quill. Whereas inkstands, or standishes, contain an inkwell and additional features, such as a wafer box to hold thin, hard disks of sealing paste; a pouncepot for fine powder that keeps ink corrections from bleeding; pen rests and quill holders.

As with all artifacts, inkwells reflect the trends, taste and culture of the people who designed them. Inkwells exist in every imaginable design beyond the standard, familiar shapes. Collectors have discovered a "variety of animals, birds, buildings, clowns, shoes, umbrellas, teakettles and even a baked potato complete with butter and spoon." Nineteenth century craftsmen, such as silversmiths, potters, metal workers and furniture makers took advantage of the inkwell market to expand their merchandise line.

Teakettle inkwells, such as the one found on our web site, are much sought after. Teakettles feature angled necks extending from the base of the inkwell and are topped with a cork or a hinged brass cover.

Inkwells began to disappear with the invention of the fountain pen in 1884 and vanished from common use with the advent of the ballpoint pen by the middle of the 20th century.
