Nautical

From the eclectic nautical to the practical nautical, collectors are always on the lookout for maritime items. In addition to historical interest, nautical pieces are much sought after items for home décor. And the nautical motif is not limited to seaside homes and houseboats. A sea-inspired theme appears in many a bathroom, kid's bedroom, and den.

Among the vast array of nautical items collectors are on the hunt for include ships' wheels, ladders, rudders, boat signal lamps, wooden and metal buoys, diving helmets, door- stops, ships' telegraphs, binnacles, compasses, barometers, scrimshaw, sailors' chests, sextants - and the list goes on and on.

Whether you are looking to buy or looking to sell vintage and collectible nautical items, be sure to know your item's value. The market is vast, so ensure the price is right. Always buy through a reputable antique dealer. And if you have a nautical to sell, consign with us!

Stuart's Musings

Letter/Paper Clips

Ah, the clip! From letter clips to paper clips, bag clips to hair clips, these simple, yet unique fasteners add ease and order to our lives.

Prior to the advent of the bent-wire paper clip, our ancestors kept letters and papers neatly secured with functional, highly decorative, aesthetically pleasing clips. Often made of wood, brass, or other metals, the clips were carved or fashioned as hands, oyster shells, florals, and figurals.

Whereas the clips of today focus on the utilitarian, rather than the artistry, the intention remains the same - to secure a stack of letters or set of papers without catching, tearing, tangling, folding, spindling, or mutilating!

Fun fact

The first bent-wire paper clip was patented by Samuel B. Fay in 1867. Its primary use was for attaching tickets to fabric.

    • Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
    • Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
    • Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
    • Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
    • Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
    • Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
    • The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
    • The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
