Stuart's Musings

Kewpies

In 1888, a young girl of fourteen entered a local art contest sponsored by the Omaha World Herald. It is said that the judges, at first, doubted a child had created the work, but once convinced it was true, she was declared the winner.

A few years later, the teenage artist moved to New York City. She brought with her a portfolio of sixty drawings and sold them within a few short months. Thus began the illustrious career of Rose O'Neill.

While fame brought Rose great fortune, two failed marriages brought her great sadness. Rose left New York and returned to the family homestead in Bonniebrook, Nebraska to concentrate on her artwork. In 1909, while napping in her "treetop studio," she dreamt that little cupids were bouncing on her coverlet. She awakened and hurried to her drawing table to sketch the first kewpie.

In December of that year, Rose's kewpies were featured in the pages of Ladies' Home Journal. Soon after, kewpies appeared in ads for Jell-O, Kellogg's Corn Flakes, Lifebuoy, and Oxydol.

Within a few years, children began clamoring for a kewpie they could "hold in their hands." Rose enlisted the aid of Joseph L. Kallas in designing the first kewpie doll. She found a German porcelain manufacturer and, in 1913, the kewpie doll was born.

Get the professional attention and advice YOU deserve for YOUR specific real estate needs. Call Stuart Brody at 617-899-8959.

"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!

  • Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
  • Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
  • Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
  • Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
  • Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
  • Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
  • The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
  • The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
