In the seventeenth century, butter molds were a decorative and identifying way to mold butter. Farmers carved the molds with their initials or heraldic symbols, or with depictions of the pastoral world around them. Carvings included sheaves of wheat, farm animals, birds, flowers, and fruit.
Immigrants, particularly those of Germanic descent, where woodcarving was a folk art, introduced their carving artistry in the United States. Interest in butter stamps and molds became so great, by the nineteenth century, woodenware factories began producing them using lathes and other laborsaving tools.

Stuart's Musings
Chein Toys
The Chein Company began as a metal-stamping operation by Julius Chein in 1903. The company produced small tin prizes for Cracker Jack and small retail stores. According to the company history, demand became so great that Chein soon aligned with the American Can Company to produce lithograph designs on metal instead of painting them. They manufactured lithographed noisemakers, horse-drawn carts, and coin banks sold mainly through the Woolworth stores.
After Julius Chein's untimely death in 1926, the company was run by Samuel Hoffman, Chein's brother-in-law. Under Hoffman's leadership the company flourished for decades, producing some of its most popular toys including the Ferris wheel first produced in the 1930s. The company's first roller coaster was manufactured in 1949, the Playland Merry-Go-Round in 1950, and the Space Ride and larger Rocket Ride came along in the early 1950s.
Fun Fact: In peak seasons, Chein employed 600 people in its Burlington, New Jersey factory.

Stuart Brody, president of Showcase Antique Center, Inc., has added real estate agent and auctioneer to his extensive and impressive list of credentials.
"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!
- Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
- Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
- Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
- Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
- Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
- Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
- The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
- The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
