Vinaigrettes
Vinaigrettes are small boxes of various shapes with a hinged lid and an internal hinged grille or screen made of gilded metal to prevent erosion. The box contains a piece of natural sponge soaked in an aromatic vinegar. Its purpose was multifold: to counteract unpleasant odors, as a facial cleanser and toner, or therapeutically as an inhalant when a woman fainted.
The majority of vinaigrettes were rectangular, but there are many examples of various shapes including shells, hearts, rounds, fish, bells, helmets, beehives, books, nuts, and barrels. Silversmiths were often asked to create designs of notable landmarks and views.
Unusual shapes, scenes, and forms command the highest prices. Look for undamaged vinaigrettes with clear hallmarks, sharp detail, and well-fitting lids/hinges.

Stuart's Musings
Black Memorabilia
Black memorabilia tells the history of racial perceptions and misperceptions and stereotypes in American culture. Although some may find a collection of this kind uncomfortable it should be understood for its historical and cultural context.
The Black Sambo stereotype became the predominate image throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Many historians point to the minstrel show as creating the image of Black people with "skin the color of coal, ruby lips stretched around an outsized exaggeration of a toothy grin, bulging eyes, flat, wide noses, gaping mouths and big feet." These caricatures created stereotypes that would last for decades.
There is a controversy in the collecting world with regard to Black memorabilia. Some believe these negative images should be taken out of circulation, while others think that the artifacts, books, toys, and images "tell the story of Black history, both good and bad." These collections serve to remind us and keep forefront the challenges that have been overcome and those that still need to be addressed.

Need to sell more than what's in your attic?
Need to sell your whole house?
Then it's time to call Stuart!
|
Stuart Brody, president of Showcase Antique Center, Inc., has added real estate auctioneer to his extensive and impressive list of credentials.
"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!
- Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
- Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
- Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
- Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
- Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
- Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
- The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
- The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
