Hatpins

Hatpins can be traced as far back as the 1400s in Britain and Europe. Used as a device to securely hold the wimples and veils worn by "proper" ladies, the pins and wires ranged in size between 6 and 12 inches long.

Hatpins reached their heyday between the 1880s and 1920s, when hairstyles became short (remember the flapper bob?) and hats became smaller, thus making the pins unnecessary.

Stuart's Musings

A Blast From The Past

Military small arms have undergone a series of significant changes since the introduction of the flintlock musket in 1630. The "Puckle Gun," a tripod-mounted, single-barreled flintlock gun fitted with a multi-shot revolving cylinder, was invented in 1718 by James Puckle of London, England. The weapon fired nine shots per minute, three times faster than the standard military musket. However, the "Puckle Gun" failed to attract investors and never achieved mass production or sales.

In 1879, John Moses Browning patented the breech-loading single shot rifle. Unable to supply the demand for his rifle, Browning sold the production rights to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company for $8,000.

From 1883 until 1902, Browning designed several ingenious and innovative firearms for Winchester. Some of them reached production status; some did not. One such innovation, the repeating shotgun, was denied production status. Browning took a sample of the shotgun to Europe and negotiated a production agreement with Fabrique National de Belgique (FN). The same shotgun was later produced in the U.S. by Remington, as their Model 11.

Get the professional attention and advice YOU deserve for YOUR specific real estate needs. Call Stuart Brody at 617-899-8959.

"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!

  • Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
  • Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
  • Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
  • Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
  • Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
  • Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
  • The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
  • The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
