Antiques and Vintage Collectibles Spotlight
Halloween Collectibles
Halloween collectibles conjure up fond memories for many of us. Halloween was the one night of the year we were granted a "license" to be a little rowdier than usual, and play a few harmless pranks without consequences.
Vintage Halloween collectibles include German and American jack-o'-lanterns, figural candy containers, noisemakers and nodders, and squeakers, to name just a few of the variety of items.
Fun fact
The jack-o'-lantern comes from Irish folklore where a man called Stingy Jack, a notorious drunkard and trickster, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then carved an image of a cross in the tree's trunk, trapping the devil up the tree. Jack then made a deal with the devil. He promised to let him down, if he would never tempt him again.
When Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways. Satan also denied him access to Hell because he had tricked him. Instead, the devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the darkness. Jack placed the ember inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing longer.
Note: Like any good folktale, there is many a version. We liked this one!

Stuart's Musings
Flow Blue
Flow Blue first appeared in Staffordshire, England in the early 1800s. Potters discovered that cobalt oxide, which is the base pigment used in Flow Blue, could seep into porous earthenware.
The flowing and blurred blue appearance was a result of the pottery being exposed to chlorinated vapors - from lime or ammonia chloride -in the kiln. Glazes containing lead oxide provided the depth of color and brilliance we find in its myriad patterns.
Since Chinese porcelain was quite expensive during the nineteenth century, Flow Blue design motifs and decorations were largely inspired by Oriental imagery and chinoiserie, although after 1850, styles became more ornate and fanciful.
Flow Blue china was produced from the early 1800s through the early 1900s.
