During the years between the two World Wars, Germany was a major producer of Halloween items. Early German Jack-O-Lanterns, which were handcrafted and hand-painted, are highly collectible items. In addition to Jack-O-Lanterns, Germans were also known for their composition candy containers and embossed paper die cuts.
Other major producers of Halloween items from this period are the Beistle Co. and Dennison Manufacturing Co., both American companies. The Beistle Company is still in business today and is one of the largest manufacturers of Halloween goods in the US.

Stuart's Musings
In the past month, we've received hundreds of items from a consignor who lives in the western part of the country. How did he find us?
Well, our relationship began with the gentleman's mother. Over the years, she had bought several items from us. She was an extraordinary collector. . . chocolate molds, butter stamps, cookie boards, pewter, jewelry, baskets, and much, much more. As is our practice, when an item comes into our store, we often call our customers who may be interested in that particular antique or collectible.
Several weeks ago, an item came in and so we placed a call to Mrs. P. Now, we knew from our last few conversations that she had not been well, but we were not prepared to hear to the sad news that Mrs. P had passed on. We spoke with her son, expressed our deepest condolences, and shared a few fond memories of his mother.
Before hanging up, the son expressed concern as to what he would do with his mother's vast collection. He talked about holding an auction and asked what we thought about that decision.
We explained to him that an auction may not be the best way for him to sell his mother's estate. With an auction, he would not have control over initial pricing or the final sale price of the items. So, we suggested that he consider consigning the items with us.
And so it began. As each box arrived, we carefully unpacked the items, appraised their value, and faxed him an itemized list of the items and prices. Once we received his approval, we tagged the items and displayed them in our showcases throughout the store. We also placed phone calls to our buyers and sold many items before they even hit the shelves. A small sampling of items from Mrs. P's estate is listed below.
If you are faced with a similar circumstance or if you are thinking about downsizing your estate, call us today to discuss a consignment arrangement with Showcase Antiques.

"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!
- Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
- Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
- Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
- Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
- Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
- Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
- The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
- The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
