A local resident stopped by the Sturbridge shop with an 8x10 photograph of a Sturbridge sports team standing on the Town Common. The photo was placed on consignment and the SAC staff immediately called a customer they knew was interested in this type of memorabilia. The photograph sold for $350.00.

What added to the photograph's high value? The team had an African-American player - rare in its day.

Feature Article

Unless you are antique savvy, it may pay to bring your attic treasures to a reputable appraiser or consignment shop. Here's a treasure that "walked into" our retail location in Sturbridge.

A woman walked in with an old, 28-inch teddy bear. This cherished, childhood item turned out to be a Steiff Teddy. She consigned the teddy bear and it sold rather quickly for several thousand dollars!

Steiff teddy bear history: Margarete Steiff was born in 1847 in Giengen, Germany . At age two, Margarete contracted polio and was confined to a wheelchair. A bright child, she attended school like other children and took needlework and sewing classes. Margarete was so competent she began teaching others. Her wages enabled her to purchase a sewing machine, one of the first machines to arrive in Giengen. By1879 Margarete had started her own dressmaking business and quickly became a success.

Steiff found a pattern for a toy elephant and began producing these as gifts for her family. Before long, other animal toys were made. Margarete decided to sell soft-filled bears for children. Her nephew, Richard Fritz, helped with the design and production of the company's stuffed toy animals.

The teddy bear's success in America was the result of President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. An avid bear hunter, Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub during a hunting trip in Mississippi. The incident was captured in a cartoon by Clifford Berryman entitled, Drawing the Line in Mississippi.

Berryman featured a bear in all cartoons that involved President Roosevelt. The bear became known as Teddy's Bear. Before long the teddy bear was in the hearts of all Americans. By 1907, Steiff produced nearly a million teddy bears. The teddy bear remains one of the most popular toys worldwide.
