Stuart's Musings
Salem Witch Collectibles
Just hearing the word "Salem" conjures up images of witches, and our minds return to the year 1692 and to Salem, Massachusetts where the famous witch trials took place. Although the Salem witch trials lasted only thirteen months--during which time 156 people were accused of either being witches or practicing witchcraft, and 19 of them were hanged--this dark moment in American history remains intriguing to this day.
Salem is a popular tourist attraction. The historic sites documented during the infamous witch trials are visited by tens of thousands of tourists each year. The treasure trove of souvenirs depicting witches and historic Salem witch trial sites includes jewelry, silverware, chinaware, bottled goods, and myriad other interesting items.
The discerning Salem Witch antique collector is always on the lookout for vintage collectibles. In the 1800s, Salem jeweler Daniel Low created a witch spoon as a souvenir of Salem to sell in his store. Its immediate popularity inspired a second Salem witch spoon design. It was only a matter of time before other souvenir pieces were produced by local businesses looking to capitalize on the Salem witch theme. The witch had become the official symbol of Salem and witchcraft souvenirs began their journey to antiquity.
