Chocolate Molds

Antique chocolate molds were made of cast metal or sheet metal that was stamped around plaster models hand-sculpted by artists. The majority of the older molds were made in Germany and France. One of the most noted mold makers was Friedrich Anton Reiche.

In 1888, Reiche established a factory for tin boxes and chocolate molds in Dresden. By the 1930s, Anton Reiche Dresden employed 2,000 people. The molds were in great demand due to their variety and diversity. By 1932, Reiche had produced as many as 50,000 different molds.

Stuart's Musings

John Walker of Stockton-on-Tees, England made the first friction match in 1826. Early matches were easily combustible, thus special containers were designed to hold the matches. Walker made round, canister-shaped tin boxes to hold his friction matches. The containers held 100 matches and were sold in his chemist's shop. The cost: two pence each. A piece of sandpaper was inserted in the boxes as a striking surface.

Containers that held matches were called vesta cases in England and match safes in the United States.

In the United States, the Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island was one of the most prolific manufacturers of match safes. Although best known for their coin silver spoons, Gorham made more than 1,180 different varieties of match safes.

Stuart conducts negotiated sales and short sales for both residential and commercial properties in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Get the professional attention and advice YOU deserve for YOUR specific real estate needs. Call Stuart Brody at 617-899-8959.

"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!

  • Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
  • Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
  • Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
  • Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
  • Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
  • Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
  • The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
  • The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
