From the Attic

We understand that people are sometimes wary to approach an antique dealer with items. And we’ve heard the horror stories, too, like the one about the antique or collectible that was bought by a dealer for $5.00 and later sold for several hundred.
At Showcase Antique Center we promise that will never happen to you. So before you sell items to an antique dealer or at a yard sale for a couple of bucks (yikes!), talk with us. We’ll always give you the true value.

A woman stopped by the Sturbridge shop with a few figurals. Our trained staff immediately recognized the value of these pieces. The figurals are now on consignment in our showcases. What did she have? A Staffordshire Spill Vase w/Fox. Value: $335.00 and a Staffordshire Figure of Pugilists Spring and Langan. Value: $595.00

Read article 6 below, Yard Sales, Schmard Sales. CONSIGNMENT = $ALE$ and learn how easy it is to consign with Showcase Antique Center.

Storage Tips for Your Cherished Holiday Collectibles

• Glass balls and ornaments should be stored in individual boxes or sturdy cartons with separate compartments.
• Wrap ornaments in acid free tissue paper or place in acid-free cylinders.
• Use bubble wrap between layers.
• Avoid newspaper and plastic wrap. Print can transfer and plastic wrap and bags hold moisture-causing mildew.
• Avoid large, plastic storage tubs–they don’t allow for proper air circulation.
• Store in a location that has an even temperature and is moisture free.

Stuart’s Musings –

About Staffordshire

Since the 1700s Staffordshire, England has been renown for its pottery and porcelain from names such as Adams, Davenport, Royal Doulton, Ridgway, Royal Worcester, Spode, and Wedgwood. Well-known figurals include Staffordshire dogs in sizes from 3" to 20."
In the 1820s Staffordshire "Blue Ware" was produced for export to America, often decorated with scenes of US landmarks. Early works were distinguished by their deep cobalt color. In1830 a softer blue was used, followed by black, pink, red, and green prints.
Staffordshire portraiture on porcelain reached its zenith from 1850 through 1900, depicting historical as well as fictitious personalities.
Makers were sometimes neglectful in adding their trademark, however distinctive border designs were signatory. So if you are unsure if your item is Staffordshire, send me an e-mail at sales@showcaseantiques.com to arrange for an appraisal.
