Costume Jewelry
Vintage costume jewelry has a long and fascinating history. It is prized not only for its style, but also for the reflection of the historical period it represents. The brightness of Art Deco rhinestones and the shine of Bakelite cheered up the depressed 1930s. The bold, lavish 1950s jewelry expressed the mood of Post-war booming economies.
In the early 1900s, working class Americans wanted to feel elegant but lacked the money to purchase precious gems. They discovered that the sparkle of rhinestones rivaled that of any precious stone.
The Roaring Twenties was an age of prohibition, cocktail parties, flappers, and the Charleston. It was during this period that Coco Chanel introduced fake or paste jewelry (costume jewelry) to complete her fabulous clothing designs.
In the Retro Period(1935 to 1950) natural materials merged with plastics. With World War II raging, many European jewelry firms shut down and several designers immigrated to the U.S, and their designs took on a decidedly American look.
The Art Modern Period (1945 to 1960) following World War II produced jewelry designs that were more traditional and understated. The bold styles of the Retro Period were replaced by the more tailored styles of the 1950s and 60s.

Stuart's Musings
Dedham Pottery
Dedham Pottery, produced in Massachusetts from 1892 to 1943, is known for its playful designs and antique finishes. There are three characteristics that make Dedham Pottery highly recognizable: the blue-and-white color scheme, the decorative borders of rabbits and other motifs, and the unique crackle glaze that made new pottery look antique. That distinctive combination was the creation of Scottish immigrant Hugh Robertson.
The signature crouching rabbits were the company's most popular pattern. In addition to the rabbits, other Dedham decorative borders featured mushrooms, lilies, clover, chicks, butterflies, ducks, elephants, dolphins, swans, turtles, and polar bears.
Dedham Pottery pieces include a wide range of tableware including plates in four sizes (6-, 7-, 8.5-, and 10-inch diameters), bowls, mugs, cups and saucers, serving platters, pitchers, tureens, teapots, eggcups, goblets, and salt and pepper shakers.
To achieve the pottery's crackled surface, it was fired once, dipped in a special glaze developed by Robertson, and then decorated. The pieces were air-dried, then stacked in the kiln for a second firing lasting twenty-four hours. As soon as the pieces were just cool enough to handle, they were removed from the kiln, loaded onto an open elevator, and pulled up to the pottery's third-floor garret. As the still-warm glaze came in contact with the cool air in the elevator shaft, an audible crackling could be heard. To accentuate the crazing, lampblack was rubbed onto the network of hairline cracks covering the surface.

Need to sell more than what's in your attic?
Need to sell your whole house?
Then it's time to call Stuart!
|
Stuart Brody, president of Showcase Antique Center, Inc., has added real estate auctioneer to his extensive and impressive list of credentials.
"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!
- Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
- Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
- Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
- Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
- Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
- Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
- The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
- The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
