Weller Pottery

Samuel Weller began making pottery in 1872 for local farmers in rural Ohio towns and villages. His everyday items, such as jars and jugs, were a far cry from the distinctive art pottery wares for which he is remembered today.
In 1893, Weller attended the World Columbian Exposition where he saw the work of art potteries such as Rookwood and Lonhuda. The art nouveau style and the associated incorporation of nature themes into art pottery fascinated him.
Weller envisioned making art pottery that could be mass-produced. He became acquainted with Lonhuda founder William Long, and the two men soon began the joint production of handcrafted art pottery. The partnership did not last long. In 1895, Weller purchased Lonhuda Pottery and began producing Louwelsa, which became one of Weller's most popular lines.
In the early 1900s, hand-decorated patterns such as Aurelian, Eocean, Etna, Modeled Matte, and Art Nouveau, were highly sought-after and prestigious pieces. The LaSa line, introduced by Weller art director John Lessell, along with the Weller Hudson line remain among the highest quality, hand-decorated pottery ever produced.
Weller Pottery continued to produce high-quality pottery into the mid-1930s, including Sabrinian, Chase, Bonito, Geode, Raceme, and Stellar. By 1935, Weller Pottery abandoned hand decoration and produced only molded pottery.

Stuart's Musings

Biscuit Tins

J. Huntley & Son was a small biscuit bakery and confectioner shop on London Street in England. In the early nineteenth century, London Street was the main stagecoach route between London and Bristol. A resting point on the journey was the Crown Inn, across from the bakery. Huntley's biscuits were popular among the travelers, but were vulnerable to breakage on the rough and bumpy stagecoach ride. Owner Joseph Huntley had the idea to preserve his biscuits by packaging them in metal tins. Seeing the value in this concept, Joseph Huntley, Jr. opened a tin-making manufacturing company opposite the bakery. In 1838, Joseph Huntley retired due to ill health. His older son, Thomas, took on George Palmer as a business partner and formed Huntley & Palmers. Palmer, recognizing their ability to send biscuits worldwide, perfectly preserved in elaborately decorated and highly collectable biscuit tins, became the driving force behind the company's international success.

Stuart Brody, president of Showcase Antique Center, Inc., has added real estate agent and auctioneer to his extensive and impressive list of credentials.
"Most people think real estate auctioneering has to do with distressed properties," said Stuart. "That is only one portion of the market. More and more people are turning to real estate auctions to sell their homes or commercial properties. Auction is ideal for inherited property, or when time is of the essence, such as in divorce settlements. Contents may be included in the auction as well."
And the benefits are numerous!

  • Auction reduces the time the property is on the market.
  • Auction eliminates numerous, unscheduled showings.
  • Auction creates competition among buyers - auction prices can exceed the price of a negotiated sale.
  • Auction takes the seller out of the negotiation process.
  • Seller sets the terms and conditions of the sale.
  • Seller knows exactly when the property will sell.
  • The buyer pays the commission when a 7% to 10% buyer's premium is used. The high bid plus the buyer's premium becomes the total selling price.
  • The seller pays no commission when a property is sold...only marketing costs are charged.
