The Belsnickel, known as Father Christmas, traveled from house to house urging children to not be naughty, but nice. To good children the Belsnickel would hand out small toys, fruit, cakes or candies; children who were naughty were left switches or coal.

Belsnickel would arrive just before bedtime, announcing himself by pounding on the door or rapping on the windowpane. It was customary for the Belsnickel to receive a treat at each house.

The image of Father Christmas was later depicted on early 20th century German candy containers and chocolate molds.
